Using Kumo in EWS Labs-User Guide

FAQ's about Kumo

Kumo is a software interface designed to map your cloud storage (Box, Google Drive*, Dropbox*, OneDrive*) to your windows computer as a physical hard drive. This removes the need to use a sync program to access files.

*Please keep in mind that Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox are not approved for the storage of institutional data.

 

To set up the service simply go to kumo.cites.illinois.edu and sign in with your campus credentials. You can then register your accounts on any or all of the three services. The next time you sign in to an EWS computer you should see those storage options appear in "my computer".


 

Kumo will use pop up notifications when drives are connected/disconnected and when file transfers are occurring. You will notice these notifications in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.

FAQs:

Can I get Kumo on my personal machine?

Unfortunately no, Kumo validates your identity as part of the campus active directory service and requires the computer it is installed on to be part of the campus domain.

Can I get Kumo on Linux/Mac?

No, Kumo has been developed exclusively for Windows. At this time the developer has no plans to add Linux or Mac support.

What is the "File Shares" option when I'm setting up Kumo?

File shares are network locations where you have files stored, for instance "\\ad.uillinois.edu\engr\instructional\netid" is the path for your U: drive on EWS machines. Most EWS labs map these automatically so there should be no need for using this section within EWS. The file shares functionality is limited to on-campus file shares that use the campus active directory for authentication.

Can we get other services / changes to Kumo?

Kumo is a program developed by Indiana University that Technology Services purchased a license for use on campus. You can request additional services through consult [at] illinois [dot] edu, but there is no guarantee they will be available.

Does Kumo work on remote options like Citrix and the terminal servers?

Kumo is currently available on the EWS terminal servers, and we are looking to add it to Citrix in the near future.
