What is happening: Windows XP machines to be blocked from campus network
Microsoft has announced that in April 2014 they will stop supporting Windows XP. The end of vendor support means security vulnerabilities in Windows XP will no longer be patched, leaving our network vulnerable to attack. In order to maintain the stability of the campus computing systems, CITES has decided that as of April 8th Windows XP machines will be blocked from connecting to the network. This includes both XP machines on campus and those connecting to campus via CITES VPN service.
CITES will be sending a targeted email to users connecting to campus networks from Windows XP machines, and Engineering IT is working to track down the remaining Windows XP machines running in the College. In the coming weeks a representative of Engineering IT Shared Services will be contacting faculty and staff that are running Windows XP to evaluate the best course of action to bring these machines into compliance for April 8th.
For most machines the best course of action will simply be to upgrade to Windows 7. However, we realize that there may be some critical compatibility issues that require a machine to stay on Windows XP. For machines that can’t be migrated from Windows XP, your IT representative will work with you and CITES to find the best solution.
